Are you planning an expedition in Ilha Grande and wondering what to bring? It's a question that inevitably comes up during the planning stage.

Whether you're a seasoned trekker or a beginner, having the right equipment can make all the difference in your experience.

During our expeditions, we use local accommodation and food services, which means we can enjoy the delicious local cuisine and take the weight off our backpacks. We don't need to carry items such as a tent, sleeping bag, towel, insulation, cooking equipment, food (except for a small trail snack), etc. This allows us to focus on the trail and the beautiful scenery of Ilha Grande.

To help you pack for your Ilha Grande trekking expedition, we've compiled a list of essential items. We only recommend equipment that we know and trust for its quality and cost-benefit. Don't waste your time and money buying anything you don't need. We've also marked some of the items with links for your convenience.

Whenever we talk about Ilha Grande's trekking expedition, it's essential to inform you that crossing Parnaioca-Aventureiro and vice versa is prohibited and must be done by boat unless INEA has expressly authorized you.

It's also important to observe the Ilha Grande State Park Rules when planning your visit.

Here's our recommended list of equipment:

  • 45l+ Trekking Backpack: Choose a durable and comfortable backpack that can hold all your gear and is suitable for the length of your expedition.

  • Attack backpack (optional): A smaller backpack to use during day hikes or for carrying essentials during the trek.

  • Hiking boot / shoes: Invest in a sturdy pair of hiking boots or shoes with good ankle support and traction to keep you steady on the rugged terrain.

  • Windbreaker: A lightweight windbreaker is essential to protect you from the strong winds and changing weather conditions.

  • Rechargeable flashlight: Make sure you have a reliable flashlight with a long battery life to help you navigate in the dark.

  • Rain Poncho: A poncho that covers your backpack will keep both you and your gear dry during rainy weather.

  • Slipper: Pack a comfortable pair of slippers to wear at the campsite or after a long day of hiking.

  • Hat: Bring a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face and neck from the sun.

  • Swimsuits: You'll likely encounter beautiful beaches along the trek, so bring a swimsuit to enjoy a refreshing dip.

  • Waterproof bag: Keep your valuables and electronics dry by packing them in a waterproof bag.

  • Hiking Pole/stick (1 or 2): A walking stick can help reduce stress on your knees and provide support during steep ascents and descents.

  • Safety pins or pegs to hang wet clothes in the backpack during the hiking.

  • Outlet plug extender: Some accommodation options may have limited power outlets, so bring an outlet plug extender to charge your electronics.

  • Repellent plug: Keep insects away from your sleeping area by bringing a repellent plug.

  • Snorkel (optional): If you plan to explore the underwater world, pack a snorkel.

  • 200 l garbage bag for beach cleaning activity (if authorization is given to cross the reserve).

  • Waterproof phone case: A waterproof phone case can help protect your phone from water damage during the trek.

  • Waterproof microSD card: A waterproof microSD card is a great way to store your photos and videos without worrying about water damage.

Personal Care:

  • Sunscreen: Protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays by applying sunscreen with a high SPF.

  • Sunglasses: Bring sunglasses with UV protection to protect your eyes from the sun.

  • Hygiene kit: Pack a kit with essentials like toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, etc.

  • Muscle pain relief rub: Relieve sore muscles and joints with a pain relief rub.

  • Analgesic/muscle relaxant you are used to: Bring any medication you typically use for pain or muscle relief.

  • Rash cream / ointment: Pack rash cream or ointment to treat any skin irritations.

  • Insect repellent: Keep insects away by applying insect repellent on exposed skin.

  • Snacks for the trekking (between meals).

Bônus Tips:

  • If you use any medication, make sure to bring it with you, only Abrãao Village has Pharmacies.

  • During the crossing, we will rely only on small shops in some villages, and options are limited.

  • Hiking snacks for the first day or two, such as peanuts, dried fruits, nuts, cereal bars, sweets like chocolate or candy, Gatorade, sandwiches, etc. During the crossing, we rely on small shops, and options are limited.

  • Cell phone signal and Wi-Fi are precarious or with no coverage in some places on the island. There are no banks or ATMs, so it is recommended to take some cash for food, drinks, souvenirs, and others.

  • Avoid using sweet perfume or essence to avoid attracting bees, wasps, or other insects.

Make sure to pack your equipment and personal care items in a way that distributes weight evenly in your backpack to avoid back pain and discomfort. With the right gear and supplies, you'll be well-prepared to tackle the trekking expedition on Ilha Grande. Happy hiking!
